Fitting mosquito nets in Abu Dhabi runs into the same three questions everywhere else: which type, what it should cost, and whether the screen will still work in three summers. What changes is the housing stock β a lot of large villa openings, a lot of tower glazing, and a coastal climate that is harder on materials than an inland one.
This guide covers what to specify, what drives the price, and what to check before you let anyone start drilling.

What is different about homes here
Openings tend to be larger. Villa living and dining rooms frequently run to three metres or more of glazing. A standard single panel is the wrong product at that width β it will bow and stop sealing. Wide spans need either a double system or a purpose-built extra-wide screen.
Coastal air is corrosive. Salt-laden humidity attacks unprotected metal. Fixings, rollers and any exposed steel component need to be specified for it, and powder-coated aluminium frames hold up far better than bare sections.
Towers have their own rules. Many buildings restrict what can be fixed to the façade or seen from outside. Worth confirming with building management before the measurement visit rather than after. General guidance for residents sits on the Abu Dhabi Government portal.
The climate is unforgiving. Summer conditions published by the National Center of Meteorology put mesh and frames under real stress, and the effect is cumulative rather than immediate.
Which screen type for which opening
| Opening | Sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom window | Single pleated | Slim, good airflow, folds away |
| Wide living-room glazing | Double pleated | Closes from both sides, halves the span |
| Balcony or terrace door | Sliding panel | Built for daily cycles |
| Entrance door | Hinged screen | No floor track to trip over |
| Kitchen window | Roll-up | Stores away, stays cleaner |
| Rarely opened window | Fixed screen | Cheapest and longest-lived |
| High or awkward glazing | Motorised | Operated without reaching |
| Seasonal opening | Retractable | Mesh stored out of the sun |
What actually drives the price
In rough order of impact:
- Size of the opening. Material and section weight both scale with it.
- Mechanism. Fixed is cheapest, motorised is dearest, with pleated and sliding in between.
- Mesh grade. Standard fibreglass, fine mesh or pet-resistant.
- Frame finish. Stock colours cost less than a matched finish.
- Access. Anything needing work from outside above ground level adds time.
Our published figures by screen type are on the fly screen price page. They include measurement and fitting rather than quoting a bare panel, which is the comparison to insist on when you collect quotes.

How a fitting actually runs
- Survey. Ten to twenty minutes per opening. The fitter measures the reveal, checks whether it is square, and notes handles, stays and any AC unit in the way.
- Specification. Screen type, mesh grade and frame colour agreed against how each room is used.
- Manufacture. Panels built to the measured sizes rather than trimmed from stock.
- Fitting. Most homes are finished in one visit.
- Handover. Every panel run end to end and the perimeter checked for light gaps.

Questions worth asking any fitter
- Do you measure before manufacture, or trim a stock panel on site?
- What mesh grade is in the quote, and what are the alternatives?
- Are the frames powder-coated aluminium?
- Is there a brush seal on the closing edge?
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Ours is set out on the fly screen warranty page.
- If the mesh fails later, can it be re-meshed in the same frame?
That last one matters more than it sounds. On a well-built screen the mesh is the consumable and the frame lasts several sets of it β which makes mesh replacement a modest job rather than a new purchase.
Making them last in coastal conditions
- Rinse and vacuum the mesh every few months β salt and dust together are worse than either alone.
- Keep bottom tracks clear; sand in a track destroys rollers.
- Retract screens you are not using through the summer, if the system allows it.
- Check the closing edge seal annually.
The full routine is in our UAE climate maintenance guide, and the reasons behind it in what summer heat does to fly screens.
Questions we get asked
Do I need mosquito nets in Abu Dhabi at all?
If you want windows open through the cooler months, yes. The WHO lists window and door screens among the measures that reduce mosquito contact indoors, and they work continuously without consumables.
Can screens be fitted to any window type?
Almost all. Arched heads, very wide spans and openings with an AC unit in them need a site visit, but there is normally a solution.
How long does a screen last here?
Five to ten years for a properly specified frame, with the mesh going first. Coastal exposure shortens it.
What about pets?
Specify pet-resistant mesh on any door a cat or dog will push against. Standard mesh does not survive claws.
