Fly screens in the UAE do not usually fail because the mesh wears out. They fail because fine airborne dust packs into the weave, and then somebody cleans it the wrong way and stretches the panel.
This is how to clean fly screen mesh properly — including the quick version you can do without taking the panel down — and the short list of things that ruin a screen in one go.
Why Gulf dust is harder on screens than rain ever is
Dust here is fine, dry and slightly abrasive. It does three things a screen in a temperate climate never has to deal with:

- It fills the weave. Airflow drops long before the screen looks dirty. If a room feels stuffier than it did last year with the window open, that is usually the screen, not the window.
- It grinds. Every time the panel opens and closes, trapped grit is dragged across the mesh and the track.
- It loads the bottom track. Packed sand in the channel adds friction the hardware was never sized for, which is what eventually kills rollers and springs.
Dust events are not evenly spread through the year. The UAE National Center of Meteorology publishes daily forecasts and dust warnings, and a week of strong wind will put more material through your screens than the three quiet months before it. Clean after the wind, not on a fixed date.
The five minute clean, without removing the panel
This is the one that matters, because it is the one you will actually do. Monthly is plenty.
- Vacuum dry, first. Soft brush attachment, lowest suction, light contact, top to bottom. Dry dust lifts out of the weave. Wet dust turns to mud inside it, which is why this step comes before any water.
- Support the back. Put your free hand flat behind the mesh as you work, or lean the vacuum head so weight goes into the frame. Never push into an unsupported panel.
- Damp microfibre, both sides. Plain water, wrung out until it is barely damp. Wipe along the weave, not across it in circles.
- Do the track. Vacuum the bottom channel, then run a dry cloth through it. This is where the grit that damages hardware collects.
- Leave it open to dry. Two minutes in Dubai air. Closing a damp pleated panel is how you get a line of mould in the folds.
The deep clean, twice a year
Once before the hot season and once after it, take the panel out if it is designed to come out — most pleated and fixed panels lift clear, roll-up cassettes do not.
- Lay it flat on a towel. Never lean it against a wall to scrub; that is exactly how a panel goes out of square.
- Warm water with a drop of ordinary dish soap. Nothing stronger.
- Soft brush, light pressure, straight strokes. Rinse with a jug, not a hose.
- Dry flat, in shade. Direct sun on a wet frame can leave water marks on powder coat.
- While it is out, check the spline — the rubber cord holding the mesh in the frame groove. If it has lifted anywhere, push it back before refitting.
Never use these on fly screen mesh

A realistic maintenance year

When cleaning will not fix it
Some faults look like dirt and are not. Cleaning harder makes all of these worse:
- A panel that stays hazy after a deep clean. The coating has gone. The mesh is at the end of its life.
- Mesh that has gone slack. Stretched mesh cannot be tightened. It has to be re-splined, which in practice means replacing the mesh in the existing frame.
- Mesh pulling out of the groove at a corner. Same answer, and it will spread if left.
- Grinding in the track after cleaning it. The roller or the guide is worn, not dirty.

Cleaning questions we get asked
Can I clean fly screens without removing them?
Yes, and for monthly cleaning you should. Dry vacuum first, then a barely damp microfibre on both sides. Removing panels every month causes more wear than it prevents.
How often should I clean them in Dubai?
Monthly as a habit, plus a clean after every dusty spell, plus two deep cleans a year. Screens facing open desert or a construction site need more.
Can I use a steam cleaner?
No. Heat plus pressure is worse than pressure alone, and it will soften the spline.
Does dirty mesh really reduce airflow?
Noticeably. A loaded weave restricts air long before it looks blocked, which is why the first sign is usually a room that feels stuffy rather than a screen that looks dirty.
What about pet hair in the mesh?
