A mosquito net over the bed is the oldest answer to the problem and it still works. But in a Dubai bedroom it is often the second best answer, and people buy one when what they actually needed was a screen on the window.
Here is what a bed net genuinely does, when it is the right call, and how to tell which of the two your room needs.

What a bed net does, and what it does not
A canopy net creates a sealed envelope around the sleeping area. Inside it, you are protected. That is the whole of the benefit, and it is a real one — the World Health Organization lists mosquito nets alongside window screening as a core household measure against biting insects.
A bed net helps at night, but window mosquito nets stop insects entering the room in the first place.
What it does not do:
- It does not protect the room. Anything already inside stays inside. You are sleeping in a box in a room full of mosquitoes.
- It does not help before bedtime. Reading, changing, using the bathroom — all unprotected.
- It does not stop them entering. The window is still open.
- It restricts airflow. Fine netting close to the body reduces air movement noticeably, which matters in a Dubai summer.
When a bed net is the right choice
There are four cases where it genuinely is:
- You cannot modify the opening. Short lets, hotel apartments, staff accommodation.
- A cot or a young child. A net over a cot protects a small sleeper who cannot use repellent.
- Sleeping outdoors. Balcony, majlis, courtyard or desert camping, where there is no opening to screen.
- Belt and braces. Ground floor near landscaping or standing water, where you want both layers.
How to hang one so it actually works
Most bed nets fail for the same handful of reasons. Five rules fix nearly all of them:
- Buy it much bigger than the bed. Netting touching your skin is netting a mosquito can bite through. Allow generous clearance on every side.
- Hang from the ceiling, not the headboard. A single ceiling point gives a cone that drapes properly. Corner posts work too. Anything anchored to the bed moves when you do.
- Tuck it under the mattress every night. A net hanging loose to the floor is an open door. This is the step people skip.
- Clear the inside before you get in. Sweep the enclosed space with a hand first, or you have trapped the mosquito in with you.
- Check for holes monthly. One tear makes the entire net decorative.
On the ceiling fixing — in a rented apartment that is a drilled hole in someone elseโs ceiling. Worth thinking about before you buy the hook.
Bed net or window screen?
| Bed net | Screen on the opening | |
|---|---|---|
| Protects | The bed only | The whole room, all day |
| Airflow | Reduced close to the body | Window can stay fully open |
| Effort | Tuck in nightly | Nothing, once fitted |
| Cost | Low, replaced often | From AED 450 per window, years of life |
| Rented home | Needs a ceiling fixing | Reversible fixings available |
| Best when | Cots, travel, outdoors, short lets | You live there and open the window |
For most Dubai bedrooms the honest answer is the second column. If you sleep with the balcony door open, a blind screen on that opening does more for your sleep than any canopy, and there is more on fitting one in a rented unit in our guide to screens for Dubai apartments.
Sleeping cool under netting in a Dubai summer

Two practical notes if you do use a canopy:
- Mind the air conditioning. A net hung directly under a ceiling outlet blocks the flow that was cooling the bed. Hang it so the draught reaches the edge of the net rather than the top of it.
- Coarser is cooler. Very fine netting breathes badly. Unless you are specifically dealing with sand flies or midges, a standard mosquito weave is more comfortable and just as effective against mosquitoes.
The same trade-off applies to fitted screens, which is why standard mesh is what goes on most homes and finer grades are an option rather than a default.
Questions about bed nets in Dubai
Do I need a mosquito net for a bed in Dubai at all?
In a screened apartment, usually not. Without screens, in a ground-floor home near landscaping or water features, many people find they do — or they fit screens and stop needing one.
Are treated nets sold here?
Insecticide-treated nets are a public health tool used mainly in malaria-endemic regions. For an ordinary Dubai bedroom an untreated net is the normal choice.
What size should I buy?
Considerably larger than the mattress in every direction. If the net can rest against you while you sleep, it is too small.
Can I use one over a cot?
Yes, and it is one of the clearest cases for a net. Keep it well clear of the child and tuck it under the mattress so it cannot fall in.
What would you fit instead?
A screen on the window or balcony door of the bedroom. It protects the room rather than the bed, needs nothing from you once fitted, and lets the window stay open. Prices start at AED 450 per window on the window fly screen page, with the full breakdown on the price list.
Want the room screened instead?
Send a photo of the bedroom window or balcony door on WhatsApp. We will tell you which screen suits it and what it costs, and the measurement visit across Dubai is free.
